Whispers of White: A Duo Exhibition of Ceramists Rachel Cheung and Tomomi Tanaka

This exhibition showcases the unique responses of ceramists Rachel Cheung and Tomomi Tanaka to the interplay of materials, textures, and forms. Through their distinct hand-building techniques, they explore the intricacies of clay, allowing their thoughts and emotions to manifest in tactile expressions. "Whispers of White" invites viewers to witness the delicate balance of creativity and craftsmanship as each artist conveys their journey through the art of ceramics.

Rachel CHEUNG

Rachel Cheung is a ceramic artist, art educator, and curator, based in Hong Kong. Her artistic practice employs the fragility of ceramics to explore the concepts of “equilibrium” and “relationship.” She believes these ideas encompass physical, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions. Her works portray presence through absence, affirm existence through what is not, and express weight with lightness. The relationships and transformations created by the works carry a strength that evokes a sense of tension, harmony, contrast, and interplay between reason and emotion within her pieces.

Rachel received the Hong Kong Art Biennale Award in 2001 and the Artist-in-the-Neighbourhood Scheme II Award in 2002. In 2016, she was invited to participate in the Fukutake House art exhibition project at the Setouchi International Art Triennale in Japan. In 2021, she participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale. Her works are collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, and the Taipei Yingge Ceramics Museum. In recent years, Rachel has been invited by the Hong Kong Museum of Art to serve as an expert advisor. Rachel is the founder of Unit Gallery and co-founder of Indige Studio. She published her artist book “See the

Unseen” in 2015. In 2018, she published the research report "New Horizons of Local Ceramic Art in Hong Kong ". In 2019, she initiated and curated the "On Earth” Lai Chi Wo Art Project and Ceramic Festival.

Rachel received her Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) degree from RMIT University, Australia in 2001 (co-presented with the Hong Kong Art School), majored in Ceramics. Later, she received a Master of Arts (Glass) from the University of Sunderland in 2004 and a Master of Arts (Fine Art) from Middlesex University in London in 2009.

The lengthy creation process allows her to pour her unexpressed feelings into each piece, resulting in sculptures that appear alive with energy. Despite the time-intensive nature of her work, Tanaka has garnered significant attention, showcasing her talent in multiple exhibitions across Japan, France, and the United States.

With an extensive exhibition history, Tanaka has held solo shows in prominent locations including Philadelphia, US, Japan, and France, and her pieces are part of public collections such as the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum and the Japan Foundation. As a rising star in the ceramics world, she continues to captivate audiences with her intricate and expressive sculptures.
